Nappy rash is something most babies are likely to experience at least once while wearing nappies. Although it may seem harmless, it can cause significant discomfort. Experts agree that it is important to try to prevent nappy rash and, if it does occur, to treat it effectively as soon as possible.
Disposable nappies are recommended during the first few days after birth. They are quick, clean, dry, easy to use, and help to prevent nappy rash.
Nappy rash is often caused by pH changes that occur when urine and stool come into contact with the skin. Always use a gentle, alcohol-free baby wipe or a soft baby washcloth with warm water. Plain water is best for sensitive skin, while mild soap may be used if needed. Avoid scented soaps and do not scrub with washcloths, as this can aggravate the rash.
Studies have shown that babies who are changed at least eight times a day experience far less nappy rash. The longer a baby remains in a wet or soiled nappy, the longer enzymes in the stool have to irritate the skin. It is also important to use a super-absorbent nappy to help keep your baby’s skin dry.
If your baby’s skin remains wet for prolonged periods, yeast rashes may develop. Antibiotics can also cause loose stools, which may trigger a yeast rash. This type of nappy rash often presents with raised red or pink bumps, or small white pus-filled spots. White patches may also be seen in your baby’s mouth, and breastfeeding mothers may experience sore nipples. In these cases, contact your doctor, as antifungal treatment may be required.
What to do if your baby already has nappy rash:
Reduce moisture on the skin by changing nappies more frequently.
Allow your baby some nappy-free time each day, keeping a towel nearby in case of accidents.
Clean your baby’s bottom thoroughly after each bowel movement and gently pat it dry before putting on a fresh nappy.
